Rock climbing

Pinnacles

In the Bay Area, we take pride in the bountiful outdoor playgrounds just beyond our urban borders. But one territory we seldom get a chance to explore is the rocky world of outdoor climbing. One climbing gym exists in San Francisco, and there are few rocky natural routes nearby. But fortunately, there are plenty of other climbing spots within two hours of the bay. Enter Mountain Adventure Seminars (MAS), an outdoor travel company based in Bear Valley. With 12 years’ experience leading California adventures, MAS runs weekend trips several times a year through the conglomerate rocks of Pinnacles National Monument, just 85 miles south of San Jose. The Pinnacles trip, says cofounder Aaron Johnson, is similar to climbing indoors, with big and easy holds on most faces, suitable for beginning and intermediate climbers. MAS provides the food, tents, and climbing gear; you bring the enthusiasm.

Having a great time! “The crew treated me as if I were part of their family,” says Misty Godfrey of Pleasanton. “They exude passion for the outdoors. The climbing was incredible; plus, they wined me and dined me—seconds and thirds of everything!”

-Matt Bloom
