Happy Earth Day to you!

In the Bay Area, Earth Day lasts a week or more. Here's a plethora of planet-friendly events.

By Schuyler Sokolow

Is it possible that the Bay Area is ground zero for the eco movement? Judging from the number of cool events launching on Earth Day and our propensity for stretching that day into a week or even a month of celebrations, we’d have to say “yes.” Cool happenings are planned for the food, fashion, film, and entertainment realms for the rest of the month. Pick one and help save the planet with a party, a meal, or a shopping trip.

EARTH DAY EATS
Looking to capitalize on your investment in a delicious green meal? Charlie Ayers, former Google chef phenom, will be serving up the goods at his new Palo Alto restaurant and donating a percentage of the profits to rocktheearth.org, a non-profit dedicated to “defending the planet one beat at a time.” Apr. 22.

FRUITFUL DESSERT

If you have yet to satisfy your sweet tooth at Sprinkles, do yourself—and the planet—a favor and scoot on over to Palo Alto for some tree-themed treats this Earth Week. The cupcakery that spurred a nationwide obsession with the dainty dessert is doling out tree-adorned vanilla confections to benefit local tree planting and environmental care organizations, now until Apr. 24.

PASSIONATE FASHION
The people at PePS—Promoting an energy-efficient Public Sector—are teaming up with Cinta Aveda Institute for a planetary blowout benefiting the Clean Water Fund. The first annual Earth Month Fashion Show features local designers and DJs to boot. With doors opening at 8 PM and a party planned until 2 AM, complimentary stress relieving rituals and makeup touch-ups by Aveda sound like prime pickings on the menu. 21 and over, $15 admission.  Apr. 26.

SPRING FLING
Usher in Earth Day with a spring celebration—Spring the store, that is—for their dual holiday and anniversary party. Indulge in organic luxury courtesy of goldiehome eco-conscious homewares—yours to win in a raffle—and tickle your taste buds with light bites and libations to top off the evening.  A portion of the proceeds goes to Healthy Child, Healthy World, so your happiness truly comes full circle. Apr. 22, 5–8 PM.  RSVP to rsvp@viepr.com.

LEAF IT TO MACY’S
Retail giant Macy’s goes triply green with their Turn Over a New Leaf campaign to benefit America’s parks this Earth Week. Go zero-emission shopping from your couch in their online Eco-Shop, just launched with stylish green goods for the whole family. One good turn leads to another with a National Charity Shopping Day on Apr. 25, when a $5 donation gets you 20 percent off most in-store items. Want to minimize your shopping waste but left your canvas in the car? Upgrade your reusable tote with Macy’s new fashionable spring version for under $2. With proceeds from all three events benefiting the National Park Foundation, your green goes straight to the trees.  Apr. 25, 10 AM–10 PM.

BRANCH OUT
Trying to get your Arbor and Earth Day obligations fulfilled in one fell swoop? Hop in your hybrid and head up to Healdsburg’s Arboretum, where spring merchandise is ethical, earth-friendly, and easy on the wallet with a 20 percent holiday discount on any item in-store.  Breathe easier on your ride back with the store’s special gift—a locally grown Pacific Redwood sapling—and start your own family tree.  Apr. 24–26, 10 AM–6 PM.

MR. GREEN
Clary Sage Organics is the go-to spot for the ecologically responsible, so spare the air this Earth Day and bike over to Pac Heights—but don’t forget your tote! Bring your own bag and receive 20 percent off all the goodies you can fit in there.  Our recommendation? Make the acquaintance of Mr. Larkin, the recently debuted clothing line by S.F. local, Casey Larkin. The clothes are completely green, from the organic fabrics to the plantable tags. In the past, green clothes have had a crunchy rep, but these styles shatter the greenhouse roof with fashion-forward architectural shapes and vintage embellishments.  Apr. 22, 10 AM–7 PM.

ECO CITIZEN
Want to be a green member of society? Make your way to Eco Citizen for their Earth Day party tonight.  The clothing company that embodies the green movement invites you to celebrate new arrivals from Kelly B Couture, Perfectly Imperfect, and Stewart+Brown. Apr. 22, 5–8 PM.

RING IN EARTH DAY
If Earth Day is the day you plan to pop the question, consider heading to Brilliant Earth to make the whole package a green affair. The local jewelry company makes environmentally and ethically responsible engagement and wedding rings. For the entire month of April, the company will insert a semi-precious green gem inside bands you buy to symbolize a commitment to green values and to each other. You may be leaving some green in the store but you’ll be “green on the inside” forever.

IT’S ELECTRIC
Electric rides are old news around these (bike) parts, but taking one for a test drive for the sake of the planet? Now that’s re-inventing the wheel, not to mention your morning commute. Ultra Motor, proud parent of the A2B electric bike, is touting its lithium at Earth Day demos around the Bay Area. Put pedal to battery and experience a ride that not only looks cool but will impress planet lovers the world over. Apr. 25, 8 AM.  ultramotor.com/sf for weeklong events in your area.
