"Being environmental doesn't have to be boring," says home architect Eric Corey Freed, whose San Francisco firm, organicArchitect, spearheads the green building movement toward "ecotopia" by making earth-friendly houses from recycled, recyclable, and sustainably harvested materials. A recent project was a Healdsburg home built around a cluster of trees that forms a natural outdoor room. Freed, who lectures extensively in the Bay Area, developed and teaches the Academy of Art's sustainable design curriculum—the foundation for his forthcoming book The Inevitable Architect: A Phase by Phase Guide to Green Architecture. 716 Montgomery St., Studio Two, S.F., (415) 474-7777, www.OrganicArchitect.com.
