Most of wine country’s old general stores, such as Oakville Grocery, have undergone picturesque renovations. Now it’s the Alexander Valley Bar and Store’s turn. The store has been around since the early 1900s, and a bar was added sometime in the 1960s, eventually making the joint better known for barflies and bikers than for dry goods and sundries. Closed since late March, it’s set to reopen next month as a tasting room, a farm store, and—in a first for the quiet Alexander Valley—
a bar featuring artisanal and culinary cocktails.
Christopher Medlock James and Ames Morison, co-owners of Medlock Ames winery, bought the store at the intersection of Highway 128 and Alexander Valley Road to showcase their sustainable vintages. The idea to make it a bar and a market selling the nongrape goods they produce (organic produce, jellies, jams, and reportedly fantastic pies) followed.
The interior, designed by Will Wick, will be contemporary, but with vintage elements. “There was an old pillar standing in the center of the bar,” says general manager Kenny Rochford. “Locals sat on one side of it, visitors on the other, and everybody carved their name on it. We plan to use it, but not in the same way.”
But that pillar isn’t the only thing former patrons will recognize. “Their beer and their barstools will still be here, alongside the new cocktails.”
