The lowly picture frame seems to be gaining status in the Bay Area. But not just any frames—vintage and antique types. Some fine-art museums have shown them in exhibits, and aficionados are making a statement by forgoing the picture and hanging the empty frames right on their walls. For the finest frames, seek out Dan King of Edgewise Arts in the Mission, who always has a few fantastic Victorian and Edwardian pieces. At Pac Heights’ Aedicule, the craftspeople are known for their excellent period reproductions. Rob Delamater at Lost Art Salon in the Mission tries to match each work of art with a frame from its era, and Jackson Square’s Cadre almost always has a gorgeous antique frame in the window, backed by an impressive display inside.
