For a city filled with so many Sapphic sisters, San Francisco is severely lacking in lesbian nightlife. While local dykes are lucky enough to have two regular watering holes, the Lexington Club and Wild Side West, they have no full-bore clubs to call their own, unlike their male counterparts. So it’s at the monthly and weekly scheduled dance nights, such as Tuesdays at QBar, that the lesbians take over the predominantly gay-boy clubs and the girl-on-girl action really begins.

At midnight on a recent Tuesday, the floor at QBar was absolutely overflowing with ladies slugging down strong, half-price drinks. At the back of the club, surveying the sea of women like a female Poseidon, stood DJ Ms. Jackson, who regularly spins at the event. When asked what she thinks about San Francisco’s lesbian party scene, she throws on a new record, adjusts her headset, scans the crowd, and says, “It’s the shit.” Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance” begins to play. And the ladies do.

QBar
11:54 p.m.

THE SCENE
QBar’s recipe calls for two parts S.F. hipster dyke to one part L.A. high femme. Add a few all-American backward baseball caps and bake at 90 degrees for five hours.

THE SAUCE
A continuous line of $2 tequila shots along the bar.

THE ENABLER
Aysha Cromeenes: the tattooed, dark-haired poet-bartender at both QBar and the Lexington.

EAVESDROPPING
“I love the lesbians. I love ’em. They know how to get down!”

Every Tues., 9 p.m.–2 a.m., free, 456 Castro St., S.F., 415-864-2877

Elsewhere
Hayes Valley’s Rickshaw Stop is home to two of the hottest lesbian dance nights: Cockblock (2nd Sat.) and Rebel Girl (1st Sat.). Filled with pretty girls and beautiful bois, this is the place to be seen. Bring your A—or rather your LGBTQA—game. 10 p.m.–2 a.m., $7, 155 Fell St., S.F., 415-861-2011

Held on the fourth Saturday of the month, El Rio’s Mango is an early-evening dance party and barbecue for women who like women. Mango mixes it up like nowhere else, alternating salsa, reggaeton, and hip-hop, and the crowd is equally diverse. Arrive before 4:30 to avoid the line. 3–8:30 pm., $8, 3158 Mission St., S.F., 415-282-3325
