francineallen1/27/2009 2:11:39 pm At the start of the Demo primary campaign, I was contributing to all three of the front runners and just wanted the Neo-con's out. When Obama pulled ahead, my husband and I contributed up to very nearly the max allowable. Then when the GOP brought in Palin, I went to the Obama site immediately and signed up to make phone calls (to other Democrats) to either call swing states, go to swing states and canvass, or keep stats from home. I made only about 70 phone calls, and did not reach everyone, but, nearly every person I did reach was glad to hear from me, and wanted to know what they could do. I was energized by those people, and began to "get" that maybe there was a chance. I cry with joy and relief every time I see the Obama coverage on TV... I realize now that I had been carrying shame about being an American, not only in these last eight terrible years, but all the way back to the Viet Nam war. I feel like the gates of a new era opened, not only to people of color, but to old liberals like myself, and I now have an opportunity to heal my heart and take pride in my country again.
