More power to us

When it comes to foreign policy, it can be tough to make your voice heard—just ask an Iraq war protestor. But the new documentary from award-winning Berkeley filmmaker Connie Field conjures a time when people power did indeed make a difference. Have You Heard from Johannesburg?: Apartheid and the Club of the West, the fourth release in Field’s six-film series on South Africa’s liberation struggle, charts the anti-apartheid movement’s campaign from 1972 to 1986 that aimed to force universities, corporations, and, ultimately, the U.S. government, to stop supporting South Africa’s white-minority regime. The Bay Area played a major role: UC Berkeley students did their free speech fore-bears proud, while former congressman Ron Dellums (now Oakland’s mayor) pushed sanctions in D.C. Sometimes, as Field reminds us, the good guys actually win.

Opens Nov. 2 in Bay Area theaters.
