A commuter’s worst nightmare?

On September 21, the minimal street parking available in this town may very well be overtaken by eco-happy guerillas under the auspices of Park(ing) Day. This annual event brings real (or simulated) grass and portable benches to tar-topped parking spots all over the city, including downtown, the Tenderloin, and the Castro. Though the event is centered here, Park(ing) Day will also infiltrate a number of other cities, including London, Vancouver, Barcelona, and Berlin. Attention, meter maids: don’t anticipate giving out extra citations that Friday. Says affiliated artist John Bela, “We’re exploring the boundaries of the short-term lease of the parking spot. And we always pay the meter.”
