When we need a getaway, we head for Carmel-by-the-Sea. One reason: the prospect of dining at Anton & Michel. This lovely restaurant epitomizes the Carmel experience”casual elegance and old-world charm. Throughout the restaurant you’ll find tables with crisp white linens, fresh flowers, and fine china. As the sun sets, the dining room takes on a soft, golden hue. The outdoor patio dining area, with floor-to-ceiling windows, has a view of the flower-rimmed Court of the Fountains; at night the beautifully lighted court sets a romantic tone. Chef Mark Simpson adds his considerable expertise to a Continental menu that showcases Monterey Bay seafood, prime beef, and Colorado lamb. Many of the dishes are prepared tableside, in the traditional manner. On a recent visit we began with the house-cured duck prosciutto with fresh melon compote, cracked black pepper, and white truffle oil. Next came Belgian endive salad with the creamy/crunchy addition of Gorgonzola and spicy pecans topped with sherry wine vinaigrette. Our entr饳 reminded us of why we always dine at Anton & Michel”melt-in-your-mouth-tender Monterey abalone, and rich Grimaud Farms duck breast. Other times we’ve shared the delectable rack of lamb and chateaubriand, expertly carved and served by our waiter”part of this restaurant’s long tradition of impeccable service. Desserts here are always worth the splurge, especially the bananas Foster, which are dramatically flamb饤 at your table, and the Grand Marnier chocolate mousse cake. Pair your meal with one of the wines from the restaurant’s extensive, award-winning wine list and you’ll see why the Wine Spectator magazine has proclaimed Anton & Michel “probably the best dining experience in downtown Carmel.”
